The Witch's Guard Project
Back in June, I escaped to the mountains for an afternoon with Megan of Murasaki Cosplay Photography to shoot my Witch's Guard costume inspired by The Wizard of Oz (1936).
This costume came together over the course of four years. For something that had a clearly defined aesthetic in my head from the start, it was a long road seeing it to fruition. While that breadth of time worried me (since we all want to see our plans come together quickly!), I realized it was a valuable fermentation period not just for the costume design but for a second project I had in the works about these guys. Fascinated by the juxtaposition of these tall, green, malevolent characters in the bizarre, often-ridiculous world of Oz, I started a follow-up novel back in 2013 about their fate after the demise of the Witch in the film. Tentatively titled Up the Back of Beyond, it also examines their origins and their significance in the broader history of Oz. Keep an eye out for the first chapter and some more information by the end of the winter. In the meantime...
